Costco is streamlining its popular cake and deli tray ordering process by introducing a new digital ordering option through its mobile app. This update addresses long-standing customer feedback and aims to make party planning easier for members.
From Paper Slips to Digital Convenience
For years, Costco shoppers have relied on a traditional paper-based system for custom cake and deli tray orders, requiring in-store visits and 24-hour advance notice. CEO Ron Vachris announced during a December 2025 earnings call that the company is transitioning this process to a fully digital format, responding directly to member requests for greater convenience.
“Many of the things that we’ve heard from our members that could be a little bit clunky are now moving to a digital state,” Vachris stated, adding that early adoption rates have been promising.
Addressing Shopper Pain Points
This change resolves a major frustration for many Costco members, particularly those who live far from their nearest store or prefer not to make dedicated trips for ordering. Previously, the only way to secure a custom cake was to physically visit the bakery and fill out a paper order slip, a system that some customers found inaccessible.
Online discussions, including a Reddit thread from two years ago, highlighted these issues. One user noted how the in-store requirement made Costco cakes difficult to obtain for those who don’t live nearby, with some members making infrequent bulk trips solely for this purpose.
Gradual Rollout and Current Availability
While a firm rollout date wasn’t specified, the new app feature has already begun appearing for some users as early as August 2025, with a Costco employee confirming a phased implementation.
The digital shift reflects a broader trend of retailers adapting to consumer demand for seamless online experiences, even in traditionally analog areas like custom baked goods. The move is expected to increase efficiency and improve customer satisfaction by removing a significant point of friction from the ordering process.
In short, Costco is making it easier than ever to get a custom cake or deli tray, reducing the need for in-store visits and streamlining the entire experience for its members.
