A recent kitchen renovation in Hawai’i transformed a cramped and outdated 1980s space into a functional, stylish area with a focus on maximizing storage and adding personality. Homeowners Anna and Colin Bruton worked with Studio Shaolin to redesign the kitchen, aiming for a balance between personal comfort and future rental potential.
The Problem: Outdated Design & Wasted Space
The original kitchen suffered from poor layout, falling-apart builder-grade cabinetry, and a dated white, gray, and black color scheme. The Brutons wanted more storage, a larger feel, and a brighter aesthetic. According to designer Shaolin Low, the existing cabinets failed to optimize the room’s limited size.
The Solution: Functionality Meets Playfulness
The renovation centered on turning “dead spaces” into usable storage. Pull-out trash cans, blind corner optimizers, and a lazy Susan were installed in previously awkward corners. A slimmer refrigerator freed up additional space. The key design choice was a vibrant color palette featuring sage green cabinets and a dusty rose backsplash – a deliberate contrast to the rest of the home’s neutral tones.
Details & Finishes
Brass plumbing, reclaimed wood-and-marble hardware, and oak floating shelves were added for both visual appeal and practical storage. The Brutons particularly appreciate the floating shelves, which maximize vertical space. The removal of a drop counter in favor of full cabinetry and a pantry with rolling shelves dramatically improved functionality.
Cost & Timeline
The month-long renovation cost between $60,000 and $75,000. Despite the high price tag, the result is a kitchen that feels both modern and inviting. The designer describes the final product as “modern with a splash of fun,” a space where everything has a place and cooking feels enjoyable.
“I love that it feels modern without feeling boring. This kitchen has a simple, timeless feel to it… super functional while also being pretty.” — Shaolin Low, Studio Shaolin
The renovation demonstrates how strategic design choices and space-saving solutions can breathe new life into older kitchens, proving that even small spaces can be both beautiful and highly functional.
